INTER AND INTRA RADIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION EXAMINERS OF PERIALINE LESIONS

The present work proposes to evaluate the inter-observer and intra-observer agreement in the interpretation of periapical radiographs, through the analysis of the evolution of periapical bone alterations. Six students from the Specialization Course in Endodontics were asked to evaluate the radiographs of the 20 endodontically treated teeth and to answer a questionnaire regarding these cases. The radiograph taken during endodontic treatment and the control radiograph (2 years after endodontic treatments), duly numbered and identified, were individually analyzed by the professionals regarding the evolution of the periapical disease during the control period. The same procedure was repeated after a week with the same radiographs, randomly, without obeying the same order, in order to verify intra-examiner variability. It was concluded that: The greatest agreement of inter-examiner results was found when the following criteria were attributed: area of bone radiolucent with an extension similar to the periapical lesion at the time the endodontic treatment was performed and decrease in the extension of the apical or lateral bone radiolucency in the time of treatment. A more expressive intra-examiner than inter-examiner coincidence was registered. Finally, the examiners' little professional experience determined a small intra-examiner and inter-examiner agreement
