Abstract

This literature review examines the behavioral changes associated with depression, as well as the main theories that seek to explain its etiology and clinical manifestation. The study discusses the interaction between environmental, psychological, and biological factors, highlighting the heterogeneity of depressive disorders and their impacts on emotional, social, and neurocognitive functioning. Adaptive and non-adaptational evolutionary approaches are presented and contrasted, with emphasis on their explanatory models. The elderly population is analyzed as a group with greater vulnerability, given its clinical particularities and higher prevalence of depressive symptoms. Finally, the work emphasizes the need for effective and integrated therapeutic strategies, considering the increase in severe cases and the strong association between depression and suicidal behavior.
