lactating woman diagnosed with Tuberculosis

Abstract

Objective: This paper aims to report the case of a nursing mother diagnosed with Tuberculosis with involvement of the Central Nervous System, typical of Neurotuberculosis. Case Report: A 2-month-old infant began to present excessive sweating, wheezing in the chest, dry cough and fever every day (38.5°C). The mother sought medical attention and the diagnosis was an acute asthma/bronchiolitis crisis, and treatment with Prednisolone and Loratadine was initiated. During pregnancy, the mother presented respiratory symptoms, associated with daily fever and weight loss; however, she was only diagnosed with Tuberculosis postpartum, when she started treatment at the UBSF Jardim Noroeste. After that, the lactating woman was investigated for the disease, performing the PPD exam at CEDIP, being positive. Treatment was started at the UBSF, with diluted adult medications: Pyrazinamide, Rifampicin and Isoniazid. Final considerations: The lack of maternal diagnosis during prenatal care highlights the need for a more attentive care with the mother-child binomial, with the development of screening policies, especially in localities known to be tuberculosis epidemic.
