Abstract

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of progressive hair loss. It usually occurs in patients with a hereditary predisposition to this type of alopecia and with circulating androgens. The female pattern of androgenetic alopecia is characterized by diffuse thinning of the hair, sparing the frontal implantation line, and usually starts between the third and fourth decades of the patient's life, with progressive worsening after menopause. In the initial phase, there may be hair loss followed by a reduction in the central capillary density of the scalp. In these patients, in addition to evaluating alopecia, it is important to observe signs of hyperandrogenism. It is also worth mentioning that patients with this pathology have their psychological and interpersonal relationships affected, factors that end up negatively affecting their quality of life.
