FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY: A BRIEF NARRATIVE REVIEW

Obesity. Environmental factors. Genetics. Metabolism.Abstract
Considered a public health problem, obesity is a pathology that is commonly observed in all age groups, and it does not distinguish sex, social position or economic class. Studies indicate a link between environmental, lifestyle and biological factors, and their correlations produce a picture of excess weight with adiposity as the final product. Thus, the present study aimed to carry out a narrative bibliographic review in order to update the recent and most significant studies on the topic. National and international articles between the years 2010 and 2020 were selected from the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) databases, Portal Periodicos CAPES, US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health Search database (PubMed) and Science Medline. The information obtained via this review indicated a significant correlation between environmental, behavioral, genetic and physiological factors as determinants in the process of weight acquisition. Although the causes of obesity are multifactorial, the environmental factor is seen as one of the main determining factors for the increase of this pathology, in the form in which it stimulates the excessive consumption of calories combined with a decreased energy expenditure.
