BREASTFEEDING AS A PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY - A LITERATURE REVIEW

The gradual increase in childhood obesity has marked the current scenario of the nutritional profile. Its cause is multifactorial, being correlated with Breastfeeding (BF). This practice is recommended exclusively until the sixth month and food introduction from that period onwards, providing benefits for the baby's development and growth. To investigate through a literature review the protective effect of exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and its relationship with childhood obesity. It was prepared with scientific articles between the period of 2012 and 2021, with the database: Scielo, Google Scholar, PubMed, LILACS, BMC Public Health, Brazilian Journals, International Journal of Obesity, in addition to course completion works and dissertations prepared by academics in the field. Considering different methodologies, the studies showed some type of interaction between BF and childhood obesity, developing a protective factor for its development. The self-regulation of milk intake can cause metabolic imprinting, in addition to the balance of the components offered to the baby, whose infant formula has higher doses of protein, causing greater growth. It is considered necessary to stimulate Basic Health Units in the implementation of public policies for the treatment of childhood obesity, and to encourage BF.
