ACUTE PANCREATITIS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Introduction: Acute pancreatitis is characterized by an inflammation of various etiologies being the main cholelithiasis and alcoholconsumption. The prevalence of inflammation in Brazil is around 15.9/100,000. In view of this situation, the aim of this study is to describe the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnosis, possible systemic and local complications, as well as the treatment of acute pancreatitis. Methodology: Full-text articles available in the Google Academic databases, Virtual Health Library and PubMed were used. Results: 19 articles were identified in the study period, all published from 2012 to 2022. However, it was noted that alcohol abuse has important implications in public health at national and global level, being this etiology causing 30% of acute pancreatitis, reaching mostly young men with a history of abusive alcohol consumption. Thus, an estimate globally showed that about 237 million men and 46 million women are affected by alcohol-related illnesses. Conclusion: The diagnosis of acute pancreatitis should be clinical and laboratory, and the initial management of the patient aims at treatment of symptoms and focused on support, since there are still no conclusive reports aimed at ceasing the progression of the disease.
