Abstract

Even with the existence of the recommendations, it is observed that in Brazil it has been frequent the inappropriate use of episiotomy, and therefore the negative implications for women such as physical discomfort, risks of postpartum infection, increased blood loss, sexual dysfunction and others. The study aims to know whether the humanization of childbirth influences the practice of episiotomy without indication. This is an integrative literature review study conducted in six interconnected stages: elaboration of the guide question, literature search, data collection, critical analysis of the included studies, discussion of the results and presentation of the integrative review. The PICo strategy was used, in which P refers to the population (pregnant women in labor); I refers to the interest of the study (Use of Episiotomy); C refers to the context in which the study is based (Humanization of vaginal delivery) and O applies to the results (Normal delivery without Episiotomy).  It is observed that episiotomy is an inappropriate practice and harmful to women's health when not recommended. It is one of the most used surgical procedures in current obstetrics, reaching an alarming percentage between 12.2% and 75%, contrary to the World Health Organization – WHO which recommends only 10% exceptionally.  We conclude that the contributions of the research aim to deepen the discussion that the practice of episiotomy in vaginal deliveries is absolutely at odds with the WHO, stating that we should adopt scientifically proven care measures. The practice of episiotomy indiscriminately without.
