ROOT RESORPTIONS ASSOCIATED TO ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: A LITERATURE REVIEW

The dental movement produced by orthodontics involves mechanical forces that manage to induce inflammatory processes necessary to produce physiological changes in the periodontium. It is common for apical root resorption (ARR) to occur after orthodontic treatment, mainly affecting incisors and molars. Given its correlation with bone loss and tooth mobility, its early detection is crucial. The present article was carried out with the aim of identifying the cause and the most common type of root resorption in teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment, as well as the risk factors associated with its appearance. Methodology: A literature search was carried out using keywords such as "root resorption", "orthodontics", "orthodontic movement", "strength" and "etiology" in databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. A total of 3841 results related to the search patterns were found, from which 3113 studies not relevant to the topic were excluded, obtaining 668 in which the aforementioned exclusion criteria were applied, leaving 164 studies, which were read to select the studies most relevant to the topic, leaving 40, which were used in this narrative literature review. Conclusion: Root resorption (RR), which affects root cementum and dentin, is a common condition in orthodontics. To prevent and control this condition, early radiographs and proper management with moderate orthodontic forces are essential. Although pharmacological options exist, their use in practice is limited by side effects and lack of studies.
