Abstract

Objective: To identify the extent of damage to the health and sleep quality of nursing professionals. Methods: Integrative literature review. Results: The selected articles addressed the characteristics and disorders presented by nursing professionals working shifts and the influence of night work on their health. It was found that the participants were predominantly female. It was observed that some studies negatively related the high number of shifts with the quality of sleep of nursing professionals, and that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and emergency sectors present professionals with greater sleep-related problems. The most common symptoms of sleep disorders found were excessive daytime sleepiness, anxiety and insomnia, in addition to depression, stress, headache and fatigue. Conclusion: Shift work has a direct influence on the quality of sleep and health of nursing professionals, leading to physiological and psychological changes.
