Abstract

Oral cancer is a malignant neoplasm of multifactorial etiology linked to intrinsic and extrinsic factors to the individual. Currently, it represents one of the diseases that are most diagnosed late. Thus, popular health education becomes a great ally in mitigating this process. The extension project Prevention of Mouth Cancer: from Ponto to Ponto, from Vila to Vila in the Amazon uses this tool to share and discuss information about the main characteristics of oral cancer and oral self-examination. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, there were strategic changes and new perspectives for the project. This manuscript seeks to report an experience of university extension in the midst of the pandemic of dental students, highlighting the mechanisms found to circumvent the limitations of the pandemic and achieve the proposed objectives. Practically, the project sought to create audiovisual content about the main risk factors, signs and performance of self-examination of the mouth and nodal palpation of the head and neck based on "Virals" that were circulating on the larger internet, in order to bring proximity to Internet users. In addition, project members create posts for the social network with aspects related to oral cancer, covid-19 and cross-cutting issues for the project's target audience. Five indicators were used that provided support to understand the scope and scope of the posted content. It was concluded that an internet represents a foundation for the continuity of the activities proposed by the project and constituted an innovation due to the adversities imposed by the pandemic.
