BLOODSTREAM INFECTION ASSOCIATED WITH CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER HANDLING: INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Infection associated with health care corresponds to one of the great abjections in relation to patient safety, becoming an adverse reaction that affects public health on a large scale. In this context, primary bloodstream infection corresponds to a severe systemic infection, bacteremia or sepsis, with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. This type of infection is directly related to the use of invasive device, central venous catheter.  Objective: To evidence in the literature the infection of the bloodstream associated with the management of a central venous catheter. Methodology: This is an integrative review of the literature, carried out in the VHL and Google Scholar databases during the years 2017 to 2022. Of the ten articles evaluated, three categories emerged to meet the proposed objectives. Results: It was identified that the causes related to infections are associated with catheter introduction, incorrect insertion and handling technique, lack of training, low hand hygiene, long length of stay and unnecessary dressing change. The actions that reduce these causes are related to the use of barrier precaution, use of 5% chlorhexidine, hand hygiene and use of bundles. Conclusion: This review demonstrated the knowledge vulnerability of professionals regarding protocols for bloodstream infection prevention related to central venous catheters. Additionally, it was noted that most professionals do not master the subject, are unaware of the strategies, or simply do not perform properly.
