Candidemia is considered one of the complications of infections caused by Candida fungi in hospitalized patients, resulting in high mortality and morbidity rates. It is a systemic infectious process originating from species of the Candida genus, recognized as the fourth most prevalent cause of bloodstream infections. Therefore, the aim of this work is to conduct a concise literature review addressing topics such as candidemia, resistance, virulence factors, diagnosis, and treatment. For this purpose, a literature review was conducted with secondary data analysis on candidemia in hospitalized patients. Various repositories were used, such as BVS Brazil, Scielo, Pubmed, LILACS, Elsevier, and Medline, with specific descriptors. Studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish from 2018 to 2023 were included, covering case studies, clinical studies, and systematic reviews, while works outside this period and criteria were excluded. The literature review highlights the growing concern with candidemia due to its high morbidity and mortality, especially in hospitalized patients. Given the diversity of Candida species and their virulence factors, such as Candida auris, multidisciplinary approaches involving clinical evaluation, laboratory cultures, and molecular techniques are crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment, requiring epidemiological monitoring to guide control and prevention strategies.
